What are the advantages of achieving an automatic quantity takeoff from a BIM model?

Getting your quantity survey data with full integration in a BIM oriented workflow offers extraordinary advantages:

  • rapid extraction of measurement data starting from the connection of all relevant architectural elements to price list items;
  • constant project costs feedback even during the preliminary design phase, without any limitations with respect to levels of detail used during the architectural modeling phase;
  • automatic cost estimate updates following any project variations thanks to a dynamic integration with the BIM model;
  • quick assessments and visual representations of quantities connected to architectural elements of the 3D model;
  • comparisons of different design solutions based on costs.

Link the architectural model objects to price list items

With Edificius, preparing the cost estimates for your architectural, interior design, landscape design or MEP project directly from the 3D BIM model has never been so easy and straightforward. No need to add on other estimating software solutions or additional plug-ins. Simply extract the necessary dimension information to estimate costs directly from the 3D entities of the project. Avoid the risks of introducing errors when dealing with building measurements, surfaces, volumes, etc.

In Edificius Cost Estimating Environment:

  • select 3D BIM Model objects and drag and drop them to the Estimating environment to read relevant geometrical data which is then inserted in the cost estimate document and then shown in a typical cost Estimate form
  • search for items in your own Price List or Price book documents usually adopted for your quantity take off tasks
  • simply assign cost items to architectural elements, choose a work section category to organize your project BoQ/Cost estimate document and choose the most appropriate measurement model from the archive to speed up the whole process.

You’ll immediately get a detailed BoQ/Cost Estimate data row for each object present in the BIM model formed of descriptions, measurements, detracted measurements, BIM entity identifiers and total amounts.

Design, evaluate choices and try different solutions with an immediate and accurate confirmation of project costs and a quick comparison with your project budget.

Produce dynamic BoQs and cost estimates directly from the project

Arrange and Structure the BoQ/cost estimate by categories and by connecting up price list items or even optimize the quantity take off process using measurement models for each individual building element. Get a detailed list of Quantities and costs for each element of the architectural model.

Thanks to multiple selection and filtering functions, quickly extend cost estimate data to entire groups of similar BIM entities (for example, all enclosures or all windows present on the first floor).

Proceed with the same method and take into account all other building elements (such as windows, doors, floors, railings, slabs, etc.) and automatically get your 5D BIM Project cost estimate or BoQ!

Update the project cost estimate in real time even while modifying the architectural Model

With Edificius there’s no need to worry about manually updating the measurements used in the BoQ.

Price book or job items are dynamically linked to the architectural BIM Model so that all Cost Estimate related data is updated automatically with each variation.

Thanks to the dynamic link between the BIM Model-BoQ/Estimate, you also have an improved visual control over those entities that still need to be accounted for.

By selecting the 3D entity in the BoQ/cost estimate section, you’ll visually be able to see:

  • objects with the same characteristics yet to be added to the BoQ (in yellow)
  • entities already included in the BoQ (in green)

Thanks to this dynamic interaction between the Model and the BoQ/Estimate, quantities and costs, 3D Model objects and their position in the model (building, floor, room, etc.), are always tracked and referenced so that you have full control over project costs during all phases of design and above all, in relation to each variation.

Print and export your Bill of Quantities/Cost Estimate in standard formats and integrate with PriMus, the software for Bill of Quantities and Construction Cost Management

After generating your architectural project’s bill of quantities, you have full freedom to print or export it in many well-known file formats such as Word, Excel, HTML and PDF.

Export the BoQ document in the PriMus *.DCF format and share it with your project collaborators and colleagues for further integration.

The integration with PriMus allows you to take advantage extra power and the extended management features that may come in to be useful when dealing with larger BIM projects.

Open your BoQ/cost estimate files, created using Edificius and continue adding measurement info in PriMus, updating its structure, editing measurements and also add rate analysis info with the Rate Analysis tools.

Once editing is completed, import the BoQ back into Edificius and attach it to the project documentation.
