BIM authoring & BIM tools

Discover the software solutions to create the open IFC format BIM model.

BIM (Building Information Modeling) is increasingly becoming a reality that implies collaboration, interoperability and coordination between the different design disciplines of the construction industry.

The BIM process can not disregard the use of software tools ("BIM Authoring" and "BIM Tools") and collaborative platforms capable of creating and managing the digital BIM model.

The IFC certification of buildingSMART is a guarantee of interoperability within the BIM process and is an essential requirement of any BIM authoring and BIM tool.

What are BIM Authoring software and BIM tools?

BIM authoring software are capable of producing virtual models created in relation to the various design disciplines involved in the project (architectural modeling, structural, plant engineering, infrastructural, etc).

In other words, BIM authoring software are applications capable of defining the characteristics and properties for a specific design aspect in the 3D virtual model and accordingto their purpose.

BIM tools are operative tools supplied with BIM authoring software (and/or connected to them) that allow the user to implement specialistic analyzes and/or "aspects" that otherwise would have no way to manage (energy analysis, structural calculations, cost management, time management, health and safety management, etc.).

BIM tools can also be defined as utilities that - for each BIM authoring software - are capable of performing specific processing patterns and return their output data to the relevant reference model.

What is the IFC format? What is buildingSMART?

The IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is an open data format created to allow the exchange of data in a BIM process without loss or distortion of data or information.

The IFC format allows full interoperability between BIM tools and applications and the collaboration between the various design disciplines involved in the BIM process because it allows them to exchange - through a standard open format - coherent information during the entire design, construction and asset maintenance phases.

buildingSMART is the international association created to promote the dissemination of open BIM and promote the adoption of open and valid standards all over the world.

The goal of standardizing BIM workflows is pursued through a certification process of software and applications. Certification ensures the correct import and export of IFC data and guarantees compliance with international standards.
